Custom-Coded vs. Wix and Squarespace: What Actually Affects Your SEO

2 min read

Wix and Squarespace have gotten genuinely good at design. Two sites can look nearly identical — same layout, same fonts, same photography — and still perform completely differently in Google. The difference isn't visual. It's structural.

Page weight and load time

Page builders ship a lot of code you didn't ask for: generic CSS covering every possible layout option the platform supports, JavaScript for features you're not using, and bloated abstractions between what you designed and what actually gets sent to the browser. A hand-coded site only ships the CSS and JavaScript your actual pages use.

This isn't a minor technical detail — Google has stated directly that page experience, including load speed, is a ranking factor. Two visually identical sites can rank differently because one loads in 1.2 seconds and the other in 4.5.

Structural control

Page builders make broad technical SEO decisions for you: how headings are structured, how images are marked up, what the underlying HTML actually looks like. Most of the time this is fine. Occasionally it actively works against you — templates that wrap every heading in unnecessary markup, or image galleries that load every image eagerly instead of only what's visible.

With a hand-coded site, every technical SEO decision — heading hierarchy, image loading strategy, URL structure, internal linking — is made deliberately, not inherited from a platform default.

Differentiation in search results

This one is easy to underestimate: if you and three competitors in the same city all built on the same Squarespace template, your sites don't just look similar to a human visitor — the underlying page structure can look similar to search engines too. A custom build has no such ceiling.

What page builders still do well

To be fair — for a genuinely simple project (a portfolio, a placeholder page, a hobby site with no real traffic goals), a page builder is a reasonable, low-cost choice. The tradeoffs above matter in proportion to how much your business actually depends on organic search and site speed to generate leads.

The honest tradeoff

Page builders trade long-term performance and flexibility for short-term speed of setup. That's a fair trade for some businesses and a costly one for others — specifically, any business where organic search or paid traffic conversion actually drives revenue.
